The Archive of My Past Performances

DON'T LOOK BACK-- (John Lee Hooker):

"Don't look back...over the days...of yesteryear
You cannot live on...in the past....Don't look back"

My favorite version of this song is by the band Them (featuring Van Morrison), done in 1965.
Do yourself a favor and check it out. (Here’s one version:
https://youtu.be/3BQM1Jk1Oq4)
Listening to this record (and all great music) seems to put me in some kind of otherworldly place.

Here’s my performances history, in which I do look back:

1984

April 5th-BENEATH BROADWAY, 148 Linden Ave., Long Beach, CA (basement of Broadlind Hotel)

Apr. 5, 1984.jpg

Maybe my 1st “documented” performance, that I can remember, anyhow.

This was a very funky place in downtown Long Beach, with poetry, performance artists and musicians.

1987

JANUARY 18th—BILBO BAGGINS, 2701 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa, CA

Jan. 18, 1987.jpg

I think that I sketched this little gem the same night I performed there.

I remember meeting Luke, of Luke and the Locomotives, at Bilbo’s, during the 80’s.

This was pretty much my 1st continuous hangout place, as I began to play regularly.

FEBRUARY 3SNAPPER’S, 18685 H-Main St., Huntington Beach, CA

FEBRUARY 4Private party, rooftop of building, Huntington Beach, CA, with the Swinging Esquires (my only performance with this band).

MAY 8—RUTABEGORZ, 211 N. Pomona Ave., Fullerton, CA

JUNE 2—SNAPPER’S

NOVEMBER 1—COURT OF ST. JAMES restaurant, 14041 Beach Blvd. Westminster, CA. Playing acoustic guitar and singing to diners in a fancy restaurant. I remember thinking, “wow, this is great! I’ve finally made the big time and secured a steady gig”. (It lasted 1 more night). The beginning of many dashed dreams to come.

NOVEMBER 2—COURT OF ST. JAMES

1988

JANUARY 3—BILBO BAGGINS

JANUARY 11—THE BREAKAWAY, 11970 Venice Blvd., Mar Vista, CA. This place, a seafood restaurant/bar, was a seminal location for emerging musicians in Los Angeles/Hollywood. Personally, the Breakaway was 1 of 4 places where I honed my craft, so to speak. There was music most nights and I learned a lot about performing here. Many truly great acts appeared on this stage throughout its existence. This was the first venue where I felt the “magic” of a creative scene going on around, with the talent mixing and blending and swirling around and outwards to new creations.

EARLY SUMMER—the formation of da da da, the first band I was ever a member of (and up to 2020, the only band I’ve been with). Yes, the spelling is in lower caps, and the name reflects the Dada movement in the arts world, during the early 20th century in Europe. Nonsense, irrationality, and anti-bourgeois sensibilities are some features prevalent in the work of these creative artists. da da da blew some minds, including mine. Long live da da da.

JULY 8—LA VIDA HOT SPRINGS, 6105 Carbon Cyn. Rd., Brea, CA. 1st appearance of da da da

July 8, 1988.jpg

…and the dancing never stopped…..

JULY 10—da da da-LA VIDA HOT SPRINGS

JULY 30—da da da-MEADOWLARK COUNTRY CLUB, 16782 Graham St., Huntington Beach, CA

AUGUST 28—da da da-Private party, 29 Palms desert, CA

OCTOBER 23—da da da-JOSIE’S, Orange County, CA

Oct. 23, 1988.jpg

Saki, the “artist” of the group, made this promotional flyer for the band.

Most of the band all lived together in the same house, in Orange, CA, during this time. Great times.

OCTOBER 29—da da da-DESERT ROCK FESTIVAL, 29 Palms, CA

Oct. 30, 1988.jpg

A terrific flyer designed by Saki for our Desert Rock Festival

The other band at this festival, Mirrored Image, included drummer Scott, who was the brother of da da da lead guitarist/visionary, Gary Bogdanoff.

NOVEMBER 30-BREAKAWAY

Nov. 30, 1988.jpg

Back to my solo shows. At this point, I am playing with the band, da da da, as well as playing solo.

This is a cool schedule for the Breakaway, for November of ‘88. How many musicians can you recognize? Some are well-known. On Sunday nights, the show was hosted by Darius, a super cool musician who helped a lot of us get established into the “scene”. I wonder where he is now??

DECEMBER 18-da da da-GOODIE’S nightclub, 1641 N. Placentia Ave., Fullerton, CA

Dec. 18, 1988.jpg

The 1st of quite a few da da da performances at this venue.

This is the ticket that we would pre-sell to our fans.

DECEMBER 21-da da da-GREEN DOOR, 9191 Central, Montclair, CA

Dec. 21, 1988.jpg

Another interesting flyer, created by our bass player, Saki, for this show.

This may have been our only gig at this venue. Interesting tidbit (or not), Montclair is right next to Claremont, (get it?), in the San Gabriel valley, southeast of Los Angeles. Frank Zappa spent some time in the early to mid 60’s in these environs.

DECEMBER 26-BREAKAWAY. Back to a solo performance.

1989

JANUARY 5-da da da-GOODIE’S nightclub.

Jan. 5, 1989.jpg

…rockin’ eclectica…….

JANUARY 10-BILBO BAGGINS-solo gigs again.

JANUARY 19-BILBO BAGGINS

JANUARY 31-BILBO BAGGINS

FEBRUARY 5-BREAKAWAY

FEBRUARY 19-da da da-GOODIE’S nightclub

FEBRUARY 26-da da da-GOODIE’S nightclub

Feb. 26, 1989.jpg

My impressions of our show that night. Notice the titles of some of the numbers we did.

Feb. 26, 1989 (2).jpg
Feb. 26, 1989 (3).jpg

Ahhhh….a real set-list from this night.

I’m noticing 5 of my originals on this list. I doubt that we would have performed more than 8 or 9 songs this evening.

MARCH 14-BILBO BAGGINS

MARCH 22-da da da-WHISKEY A-GO-GO, 8901 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA. The legendary Hollywood music venue.

March 22, 1989.jpg

This looks to be an Orange County-based local music paper, with da da da listed, for bookings.

MARCH 29-BREAKAWAY. Solo.

APRIL 3-BREAKAWAY

APRIL 7-da da da-The STRAND, 1700 Pacific Coast Hwy., Redondo Beach, CA

Apr. 7, 1989.jpg

We were the supporting act for Wild Child, a Doors tribute band. The lead singer of Wild Child really did look like Jim Morrison, too! I think he became semi-famous later on. His name was Dave something. da da da did (dadadadid) several shows with Wild Child in that time period. I remember that the Strand had a revolving stage, set among dinner tables with nice table-cloths and everything. Very “upper-class” environment.

I also remember that we lost quite a bit of $$ on this one. Standard policy, unfortunately.

APRIL 11-BILBO BAGGINS. Back to being a solo act.

APRIL 15-Costa Mesa, CA. neighborhood festival. Outside. A nice gentleman named Jonathan booked me for this one. Funny how the memory works, isn’t it? I cannot remember anything else about this show. But Jonathan and I met and hung out for a week or so around this time.

MAY 9-BILBO BAGGINS

JUNE 16-da da da-The STRAND

June 6, 1989.jpg

da da da business card.

JUNE 25-da da da-GOODIE’S nightclub

June 25, 1989.jpg

Yup..the 80’s…big hair and heavy metal. da da da was definitely not a part of THAT scene

Bottom of the bill…there we are. Payin’ dues. On a screamin’ Sunday.

JULY 7-da da da-The PALOMINO CLUB, 6907 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA

July 7, 1989.jpg

The famous Palomino club. Probably the best-known country music club in the Los Angeles area. The bands and acts that appeared on this legendary stage throughout the years: Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Everly Brothers, Flying Burrito Brothers, Rick Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, to name 8. Also was the place where George Harrison, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty and others had an impromptu jam one night. Venue closed not too many years after this show.

They had a great pinball machine here, too.

JULY 23-da da da-LA VIDA HOT SPRINGS

July 23, 1989.jpg

Somewhat of a biker bar, roadhouse kind of a place. We liked it.

JULY 30-da da da-GOODIE’S nightclub

July 30, 1989.jpg

Three Bob Marley/Wailers songs on this set-list. I don’t think we ever did a show without playing some Marley and some Grateful Dead material. “Lively Up Yourself”—I still have memories of practicing and practicing the off-beat rhythm to this song, during da da da rehearsals. Poor Gary, trying to teach us how it should go. I learned a great deal from him.

AUGUST 7 OR 8—BREAKAWAY. Solo performance.

AUGUST 11-da da da-The STRAND

Aug. 11, 1989.jpg

Another da da da/Wild Child shared bill.

This show here may have been the final performance of da da da. For the short time we were together, we made some incredible music. Sadly, we never released a record. But, there are hours and hours of da da da recordings which reside in the Sphere Vaults, which very well could see the light of a new day.

AUGUST 29-BILBO BAGGINS. Solo show. At this point in time, I am basically a solo act, with da da da transforming into different and new realms of creativity.

SEPTEMBER 5-BREAKAWAY

Sept. 5,6,17, 1989.jpg

Yes, everything WAS exploding my head apart in those days. Creative explosions, y’ understand.

This flyer covered 3 of my solo shows during this period.

SEPTEMBER 6-8121 CLUB, 8117 Sunset Blvd., (downstairs from the Coconut Teaser). My 1st appearance of many at this cool place on the “strip”. You could always hear the street crowds and cars while performing here. Raw and funky and smelly.

SEPTEMBER 17-BREAKAWAY

Sept. 17, 1989.jpg

Jay Tinsky was the one who booked the acts at the Breakaway. And perhaps Mike Giangreco, as well. A lot of talent on this month’s schedule, as you can see. I remember being blown away by watching David Zasoloff one night here. Oh, and there’s Smokey Miles playing on the 21st. Funny and terrific guy. Very kind. I later appeared on one of his cable access shows that he produced. (Somewhere later on this time-line).

In these days, I was living in Orange County, CA., and I would spend as many nights as I could in the LA area, soaking up the atmosphere, staying up late ‘till the wee hours of the morning, and finally driving back to the bands’ home, and then doing it again and again. Oh yeah, and working a 40-hour week at the same time. Payin’ dues.

OCTOBER 17-NATURAL FUDGE CO., 5224 Fountain Ave., Hollywood, CA. My first appearance at this venue.

Oct. 17, Nov. 3, 30, 1989.jpg

Brenda, who ran the Natural Fudge, was a beautiful, crazy character, whom we all loved. Some nights you would get some strange steet people coming into the club. I don’t believe there was a cover charge, so, anyone could just walk in. Well, it WAS Hollywood!!

OCTOBER 26-BENEATH BROADWAY

NOVEMBER 3-MAMA PAJAMA, 3786 Durango Ave., West Los Angeles, CA. One of the 4 “magic” spots for me, personally. Could be my 1st show at this boutique, art gallery, coffee-house, vintage clothes space. This venue would become one of the most important and influential spots that I had the pleasure to play. Truly epic. And all happening in a little, tiny storefront on Venice Blvd. Nora Landrum was the owner/mama, and her daughter, Linda, (soon to become the legendary, brilliant artist Alfalfa Jones), the artistic spirit of this mecca for coffeehouse artists/musicians/poets/comics/story-tellers/magicians/freaks/dancers, and everyone else who had something that could not be contained inside their creative heads. More about this place later.

NOVEMBER 4-BOHEMIAN CAFE (Bogarts), 6288 Pacific Coast Hwy., Long Beach, CA. First appearance at this small club. (located in the same building as Bogarts nightclub).

Nov. 4, 1989.jpg

I met Dan Smith in Orange County. We would play together and practice at his home. Great bass player. Super guy. He’s still playing, too, I believe. I met Jef Davis around the clubs in LA. He worked at the McCabe’s guitar shop, in Santa Monica, which is one of the few places on this time-line that is still open. Jef is a wonderful, kind soul with a lot of talent and creativity. Not too long after this show, we moved in together with some others, into a magical place in the Silverlake section of LA. More on that later.

This show was probably the only time Dan and Jef and I played together for a show. I’ve no idea what we played this night. Probably a lot of my originals.

NOVEMBER 10-SUNSETS club, Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach, CA.

NOVEMBER 17-MAMA PAJAMA

NOVEMBER 30-BREAKAWAY

Oct. 17, Nov. 3, 30, 1989 (2).jpg

DECEMBER 14-CLUB 88, 11784 West Pico Blvd., LA, CA.

Dec. 14, 1989.jpg

My 1st appearance at this club. I remember this joint as being a bit “seedy”. Although memories can often be mistaken. You know what they say, “if you can remember the 60’s, then you probably weren’t there”. Well, that can be true for the 80’s and 90’s as well.

Looks like I played about 9 songs this show. With either “Poor Little Fool”, or “Window Shop” being the last request. Who was Bill?

Dec. 14, 1989 (2).jpg

Guess I’m the opening act at this show.

Maybe it was Bill Skinner who requested my last song? (see set-list above).

Greg was a very terrific friend of mine. He loaned me a guitar of his for quite a while, since mine was broken.

Tom was the mandolin player. Lived in his camper that we called Daddy’s Den. Lots of jams in that camper. Heart of gold.

MARCH 23-MAMA PAJAMA

MARCH 25-”song swap”, home of Andy Manoff, West LA, CA. Andy was/is a wonderful human being with a deep, velvet voice, who can play just about any kind of instrument, as well as making them. This was one of those events/parties that songwriters would host at their homes, where a number of songwriters would get together and share songs.

MARCH 25-AL’S BAR, 305 S. Hewitt St., Los Angeles, CA. 1st time at this venue. Seedy, smelly, dirty, amazing atmosphere. Legendary venue in downtown LA for punks, poets, etc.

Must be a very profound statement of writing along the edges of this flyer. Or not.

APRIL 8-IGUANA coffeehouse. 1st time at this coffeehouse. The 3rd of 4 venues that truly made a great impression on myself and the entire Los Angeles/Hollywood area of musicians/artists/poets. Tom Ianello was the owner/host of this great spot. More about this place later, for sure.

Wood & Smoke (appearing on May 12), were an acoustic duo whom I first met at the Bilbo Baggins club in Orange County. Cool guys. Wonder where they are now? Wouldn’t it be interesting to research all of these acts and find out who and what and where and how? OK. Go for it, all of you historians.

APRIL 30-BREAKAWAY

MAY 1-BREAKAWAY

May 1, 1990.jpg

Dee Dee Dunmoyer and I, in the lobby of the Breakaway, waiting to perform.

This was an article appearing in the LA Times, as the acoustic music scene keeps getting bigger and better all around these parts.

MAY 2-MAD HATTER’S espresso bar, 5819 W. Pico Blvd., LA, CA. First time at this coffeehouse.

May 2, 1990.jpg

I probably drew this while waiting to perform at Mad Hatter’s. More than likely, I performed some of the songs in this sketch on that night.

Note #2: Notice the special guests, the Oxymorons. At least 1 member of this band, had been a quasi-member/hanger-on of da da da in the earlier days.

MAY 18-MAMA PAJAMA

MAY 19-BOHEMIAN CAFE

MAY 26-CHERRY ORCHARD. ??. Where was this spot? And what was this place? I know that I performed here on this night, though. “..the ravishes of tyme drift away…as memories and forgotten dirt…”

JUNE 9-BARBARA MENDES GALLERY, 1308 Factory Place, #4J, LA, CA. Art studio opening. First of many performances for the greatly talented and imaginative and creative and wonderful artist, Barbara Mendes.

June 9, 1990.jpg

Barbara Mendes met us and we met her at Mama Pajama. Just one of many examples of how a small spot like Mama’s could change the world just by being there, where creative minds could meet and mingle and spread wings into so many different facets of life and love and joy. Barbara created this flyer for her opening night. What a talented and beautiful spirit she was/is. Look her up.

JUNE 11-BREAKAWAY

JUNE 13-HIGHLAND GROUNDS, 742 N. Highland Ave., Hollywood, CA. coffeehouse/restaurant. 1st appearance at this legendary meeting place for talent and creativity, in the heart of Hollywood. This is the 4th of 4 very special places for me and the entire artistic community of musicians/artists/film-makers/screen-writers, singers, set-designers, producers, directors, casting agents, actors, promoters, aspiring wanna-bes, folkies, rockers, punk, avant-gardists, photographers, and on and on and on. Words cannot adequately describe the great times we had here. Food/alcohol (which straight coffeehouse were not allowed to sell), inside dining, with outside firepit for socializing. Events/music almost every night. Everyone stopped by here, at all hours, to mingle and hang out. Rich and Leslie Brenner were the owners/operators of this oasis. From here on out, everything is in place for the renaissance of creative music/poetry/happenings in LA/Southern California. If you were like me, it was too exciting to sleep. So, you didn’t sleep much. There will probably never, ever be a tyme like this (approximately 10 years) again. Before the internet and the computer chip took away our physical and creative alliances and relationships with each other, THESE WERE THE BEST OF TIMES. The ones who were there…well, you know who you are. The ones who missed it….well…cie la vie.

JULY 15-COMEDY STORE (Belly Up room), 8433 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA. First time at this venue. This is the world famous comedy club where all the great comedians appear. In those days, they would have variety shows in a special room, downstairs from the main room. The Belly Up room show was hosted by Skip E. Lowe. What a character he was. Later to be immortalized as Jiminy Glick, the hilariously funny tv interviewer, invented by Martin Short. I don’t think Mr. Short ever really actually acknowledged who he was basing his comedy character on, but anyone who spent time with Skip E. Lowe, knows.

JULY 16-BREAKAWAY

JULY 23-BREAKAWAY

JULY 26-NATURAL FUDGE CO.

DECEMBER 7-THE BUZZ, 3932 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA

Dec. 7, 1990.jpg

DECEMBER 12-HIGHLAND GROUNDS

DECEMBER 14-MAMA PAJAMA. In 6 days, I have found myself playing at the 4 best coffeehouse/music venues in the area. Pretty cool. Flying high.

JANUARY 27-IGUANA

Mar. 30, 1991.jpg

I produced this show at Mama’s. Robert LaCarr was a gifted harmonica player. Nell Brickner was a sweetheart acoustic singer. Jim Prior——we got to be pretty tight in those days. Very very good friend of mine. Heart of gold, “y’sah”, as he used to say. I miss him still.

I may have met Enzo and Carmen on this night. Super cool people, from Italy.

Mar. 30, 1991 (2).jpg

Set list for the show. 3 or 4 of those songs I don’t quite remember nowadays.

SEPTEMBER 1-MAMA PAJAMA

Sept. 1, 1991.jpg

My set list for this show.

SEPTEMBER 3-MAMA PAJAMA

SEPTEMBER 5-MILLIE’S CAFE, 3524 W. Sunset Blvd., Silverlake, Ca. This was/is a great, cozy restaurant in the heart of Silverlake, right on the strip. A few booths, and counter service, too. All the “hipsters” would hang here. No way was I “hip”, but I loved the soup, and hanging out, reading the paper on a Sunday afternoon. I don’t believe they had live entertainment very often. But, this was one of those nights.

SEPTEMBER 7-ELIXER coffeehouse, 8612 Melrose Ave., Hollywood, CA. First time appearance at this small place.

SEPTEMBER 8-IGUANA

SEPTEMBER 17-IGUANA

SEPTEMBER 20-COBALT cafe, 21622 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills, CA. New location for the Cobalt cafe, in the “valley”. “Valley” usually meant the San Fernando valley, to us natives. Over the Cahuenga Pass. Sometimes the valley just seemed far, far away from Hollywood/Los Angeles. And I don’t mean in physical miles. But this place rocked and rolled, with poetry and spoken word and art, etc.

MARCH 9-ST. JAMES CLUB, 8358 Sunset Blvd., W. Hollywood, CA. Now, this was a rare occurance at the time. The high-clientele, fancy, upscale, trendy, $$-rich club located in an expensive, Beverly Hills type of hotel. Bohemian, artsy/hippie types mingling with starlets and actors and $$$$. I don’t think it lasted long.

Oh, look!. It’s Scott Edwards on the 20th. He was the host of the open mike nights at Common Grounds. Great guy. Oh, to have hair like that! And there’s Sandy Ross and Len Chandler on the 27th. Mathew Lee on the 23rd. Fine keyboard player and super cool dude. And Jeff Winter on the 9th. Class guy.

AUGUST 22-KIBITZ ROOM, CANTER’S restaurant/deli, 419 N. Fairfax Ave., Hollywood, CA. 1st appearance at this great bar/room. Very inspirational and influential venue for me. This would have to go into my personal top 5 spots in LA of all time. No other place like it. The bartenders alone are worth the price of admission (which was $0). The stories I could tell. But I won’t. Not here anyway. Anyone who is anyone has performed here at least once. Great memories and stories are intertwined with this place. And it’s still there. For LA rock music history, this is one of the best, if not THE BEST, hangouts, ever. 24 hours. I’d hang out after shows, before shows, dance, mingle, conversate, perform. Many is the night where i’d see the sun come up, here in this Fairfax neighborhood. ‘Nuff said.

NOVEMBER 29 THRU DECEMBER 1-tribute/fan gathering for George Harrison, Hollywood and La Brea (location of Beatles star on sidewalk).

Dec. 1, 2001.jpg

A very sad day for music lovers around the world. Upon hearing the news of George Harrison’s death, everyone just seemed to gather. Most went to the logical place, where the Beatles star was located on the walk of fame. The 1st night, we just sat around candles and listened to his music on the radio and CD/sound systems. By the next day or two, guitars came out, and everyone just seemed to spontaneously start singing and playing together. The feeling and love between everyone on the streets, complete strangers on normal days, was immense. At that time, we all felt like family. It’s hard to describe in words what that weekend was like. Many people stayed for hours and hours around that location, going home for maybe some sleep or food, then coming back. We were family. The power of music and love really came together in a profound way for those few days. Nothing was planned or thought-out. Soon, though, the tv and radio and media and microphones came, and before long, the spirit seemed to dissipate, and then it became something else. But, for those rare hours in the late Thursday night and into Friday and part of Saturday….it was quite an incredible time and place.

A few really good horn players were here, as well as a terrific violin player, who I jammed with on “Roadhouse Blues”. Didn’t catch her name, though. Cover charge plus 2-drink minimum for musicians (I didn’t), means I probably won’t be back. Host CC seemed like a nice guy, though.
